Rudolf Denk (born February 7, 1944 in Brno / Moravia ) is a Germanic-comparative literary and media scholar with a focus on German medieval studies, theater, film and media studies and their interrelationships.

Career

In 1962 Rudolf Denk obtained his Abitur. From 1962 to 1968, Denk studied German, theater studies, musicology and classical philology at the universities of Vienna and Munich. From 1962 to 1963, Denk began vocal training at the Academy / University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and worked as an assistant director at the Salzburg Festival and the Munich Kammerspiele . After the state examination in 1968 he was a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences for Social Work in Munich; In 1973 he received his doctorate at the German Seminar of the University of Munich with a mediavistic and musicological thesis, which was funded by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Denk went to school and taught at the Schillergymnasium in Ludwigsburg as a German, Latin and music teacher. In 1974 he came to the Freiburg University of Education as a lecturer , where he became professor for German language and literature and their didactics in 1977. After the dean's office and work in various committees, Denk was rector of this university from 1990 to 1998 . 1994-1998 Chairman of the State Rectors' Conference. Member of the State Research Advisory Board. Until 2015 program officer of the Franco-German University. Expert in an accreditation commission of the Swiss Conference of Directors of Education. Various research projects funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg focused on the media and reading behavior of young people and the elderly, as well as teacher training in integrated Franco-German courses and European contexts ("European teaching offices").

Denk lives in the Black Forest near Freiburg im Breisgau, is married and has two children.

Research priorities

From the beginning, Denk's work has been characterized by crossing the boundaries of the scientific fields of literary and musicology and the associated synthesis of aesthetic, intercultural and comparative interests. His attention to questions about the reception of various media such as theater and film by different age groups is just as pronounced. Denk is particularly interested in the interactions between the arts involved in theater and film. Practical theater issues as well as possibilities for cooperation between theater practitioners and representatives of theater theory are not forgotten. As a result of this approach, the theater expert led and continues to conduct theater excursions and theater trips from a comparative perspective with different audiences; The experience gained thereby became the starting point for further book and research projects.

As early as 1977, Denk published an integrated media didactics "which already contains all the requirements for approaches that we are struggling for today in teacher training", a book "which, in retrospect, can be described as groundbreaking ... Rudolf Denk can, without exaggeration, be a spiritual thought leader a film didactics that is establishing itself today. " (Joachim Pfeiffer). A textbook on drama and theater didactics successfully continues this approach; Studies on the history and topicality of European theatrical landscapes - especially in Baden-Württemberg - are still the focus of Denk's advanced studies. In addition, there are pioneering developments and publications on European teacher training that transcends national borders: European teaching offices and integrated courses of study initiated by Denk are, for him, training concepts for the teacher training of tomorrow.
