Arthur Schnitzler Archive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Arthur Schnitzler Archive in Freiburg im Breisgau is one of the most important places where the estate of the Austrian writer and doctor Arthur Schnitzler (1862–1931) is kept. It was founded in Freiburg in the mid-1960s and is affiliated with the German Department of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . The extensive archive of copies includes most of Arthur Schnitzler's estate.

Schnitzler's estate

Most of the extensive estate that remained in Vienna after Schnitzler's death in 1931 was donated to the Cambridge University Library in 1938 in order to save it from destruction by the National Socialists . In the post-war period Heinrich Schnitzler had the entire estate, including the papers owned by the family, microfilmed. A copy of these films was made available to the Freiburg German studies specialist Gerhard Neumann. See the more detailed article: Arthur Schnitzler's estate .

Foundation of the archive

In order to make the material from the Schnitzler research papers more easily accessible, it was decided shortly afterwards to set up a separate archive . With the help of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and with the collaboration of Gerhard Neumann and Jutta Müller, xerocopies were made from the microfilms . These were arranged according to a new system, filed in special boxes and recorded in a finding aid that was published in 1969 by the Munich publisher Wilhelm Fink (see list of literature). The premises of the Schnitzler archive were initially at Belfortstrasse 20 in Freiburg; since 2010 the archive has been housed in the library of the German seminar.

Duration

The core stock of the archive comprises around 50,000 sheets. The estate consisted mainly of text-genetic material for almost every published work by Schnitzler, manuscripts of unpublished works, autobiographical material and numerous letters. In 2009 all the material was digitized .

Schnitzler's diaries and his personal documents (certificates, certificates, photos, etc.) are not included in this estate . Together with a large number of other letters and individual work manuscripts, these are in the German Literature Archive in Marbach .

In the last few years, the Schnitzler Archive has endeavored to expand its holdings. In the course of an extensive consolidation, copies of further manuscripts were acquired, which, in addition to the German Literature Archive in Marbach, are also in the Austrian National Library and the Israeli National Library in Jerusalem . At the same time, work began on building up a collection of first editions and Schnitzler films .

use

The Arthur Schnitzler Archive does not yet have its own database; it is explicitly made accessible solely via the Neumann / Müller finding aid . However, it is indirectly possible to search for the holdings of the Schnitzler Archive in the " Kallías " database of the German Literature Archive in Marbach, as this includes not only its own holdings but also the Cambridge holdings.

All holdings are accessible and usable in the archive. Users undertake to provide the Schnitzler archive with a free copy of all publications and their subsequent editions or re-use in which they have evaluated material from the archival material . This also applies to examination, diploma and master's theses. In the publication, the Schnitzler Archive of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg must be named as the owner of the archive material. There is also the option of acquiring a limited number of copies of the desired texts.
