Werner Welzig

Werner Welzig (born August 13, 1935 in Vienna ; † February 26, 2018 in Brunn am Gebirge , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian author, university professor at the University of Vienna , Germanist and president of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Welzig completed a degree in German and history at the universities of Vienna and Paris. In 1958 the doctorate to Dr. phil. and in 1963 the habilitation for modern German literary history. In 1968 he was appointed full professor at the University of Vienna . From 1973 to 1974 he was dean of the philosophical faculty of this university. In 1973 he was elected a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, of which he was general secretary from 1983 to 1991 and of which he was president from 1991 to 2003. Welzig was also a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz .

The Werner Welzig Prize was founded in 2003 to honor Werner Welzig's presidency. It is awarded to employees of the Austrian Academy of Sciences who "contribute in a special way to internal cohesion and / or to the public reputation of the Austrian Academy of Sciences".
