The technology, armament and rearward services section (V section) of the "Friedrich Engels" military academy in Dresden was established in 1986.

history

The section had its origins in the "Panzer-Ingenieur-Dienst" faculty created in 1958 at the NVA College for Officers, which later became the "Friedrich Engels" military academy. First faculty head, later section head, was Lieutenant Colonel Raulien.

assignment

The task of the section was to train tank service / motor vehicle service officers to become qualified engineers and to qualify them for later use as "Deputy Commander for Technical Equipment" (StKTA) at the troop level. The section started its work with

  • three chairs armor service,
  • a chair for automotive services,
  • a Chair in Missile and Weapons Service and
  • the Chair of Mathematics and Science Education.

When the faculties were reorganized into sections in 1970, the technical chairs were assigned to the “Land Forces” section and integrated into an “Institute for Rear Services”. In 1978, with the subordination of the technical services in the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV) under a deputy of the minister and head of rearward services , a section "rearward services" was finally established from this institute. It lasted until 1986.

The renewed reshuffle of the section was again due to the subordination of the technical services in the MfNV. Only when the administration of the technical services in the ministry were subordinated to a competent deputy of the minister and chief technology and armament, there was finally a section "technology and armament and rearward services" at the military academy . The missile weapons technology service was also included in three technical chairs. With this subordination, the function “Deputy Commander for Technology and Armament” (StKTB) was created in the NVA and on September 1, 1986 with the training in a new training profile “Deputy Commander for Technology and Armament” 'after a four-year program began. In accordance with the development of technology and armament and the technical services of the NVA, the technical chairs of the section were restructured and the training program was re-established, so that the training of officers in the missile and weapons service, the tank service and the motor vehicle service was the first Academic degree - Diplomingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), who could be used as "Deputy Commander for Technology and Armament" by units.

The chair “Rear Services” remained in the section and trained officers for the rear services.

Training of officers in the technical services

The prerequisite for taking up a degree in the profile “Deputy Commander for Technical Equipment” (StKTA), later “Deputy Commander for Technology and Armament” (StKTB), was a service of several years in the troops in the battalion management level or equivalent and from 1965 a degree as a technical college engineer. The officers of the technical services completed the five-year, from 1965 four-year course, with the academic degree "Diplomingenieur" (Dipl.-Ing.).

Stages of training

From 1959 to 1965, officers of the tank service and the motor vehicle service were trained as "Deputy Commander for Technical Equipment" (StKTA) in a five-year training course. The training in mathematical, scientific and engineering basics was guaranteed by the Dresden University of Technology, later the Technical University. 52 officers have completed this training. From 1965 onwards, the increased capacities of the faculty's teaching staff made it possible to take over the entire training, including the training previously guaranteed by the Technical University of Dresden up to the intermediate diploma. The basis was a 4-year program, according to which five academic years began the training from 1965 to 1971 and the last of which ended in 1975. A total of 85 officers completed their training as Dipl.-Ing. the tank and motor vehicle services. This training expired in 1974 and from this point in time officers of the motor vehicle service as StKTA as well as for the work of the motor vehicle service in staffs for all branches of the NVA and for other armed organs of the GDR were trained as engineers. 146 officers completed this training. In addition to the training of officers to become Dipl.-Ing. officers of the technical services received further training in postgraduate qualification courses. Over 400 officers have taken part in these courses. In cooperation with various institutions, in particular the Research Institute for Road Safety at the University of Transport in Dresden, the Motor Vehicle Technical Office of the GDR and the German People's Police, automotive auxiliary experts and motor vehicle experts were trained in courses.

Starting in 1986, officers of the tank service, the motor vehicle service and the missile and weapons service of all branches of the NVA and officers of other armed organs as well as officers of the Polish army were trained for their work as "Deputy Commander for Technology and Armament" (StKTB) in a four-year training of a unit or as officers of the technical services in staffs. In addition to the chairs of the technical services, chairs of other sections of the military academy and central chairs were involved in this training. The “Social Sciences” section taught subjects such as: Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, Political Economy and Military Economics, and Military Education and Psychology. Through other sections and central chairs of the military academy, a large number of subjects of military training were taught from the tactics of the land forces, to the tactics of the branches of the armed forces, special troops and services to the territorial area of ​​national defense.

Forms and methods of training included: lectures, seminars, laboratory work, exercises, practical training in technology and armament, exercises with units of the technical services in the field, staff exercises and command staff exercises in the field. The officers' auditors completed a three-month internship in the troops.

In half-yearly and annual projects, written work on a given topic had to be written, mostly integrated into research work by the chairs. The training was concluded with examinations for major subjects and with the defense of the thesis.

The training and qualification of officers to become motor vehicle experts organized in 1989 and 1990 together with the testing organization DEKRA formed a basis for a number of graduates in terms of their work in the economy after 1990.

Military Technical Faculty

The Military Technical Faculty of the Military Academy was responsible for the planning and coordination of the scientific work of the technical chairs and the exercise of the right to award doctorates “A” for doctoral engineer (Dr.-Ing.) And for “B” for doctorate in technical sciences (Dr. sc. techn.). It was re-established in 1970 after the faculties of the Military Academy were reorganized into sections. Colonel Hans Parche was appointed as the first dean. He headed the faculty until 1990. In 1990, Colonel Klaus Kürbis was elected Dean of the Military Technical Faculty.

Research areas

According to the military and technical components of the training, research focused on two main directions - the military-technical and the technical area.

Military-technical area

Research in the military-technical area concentrated on the sub-processes of technical security. A first concerned the investigation of the management processes of the deputy commander for technical equipment (StKTA). Works by Franke, Scholz, Allwelt and later by Knauthe, Stephan u. A. pursued this direction. Their results are reflected in instructions for the management bodies of the technical services in confidential and also secret service regulations, instructions and manuals for the various management levels. In a second direction, investigations were carried out on the use and repair of tanks and vehicle technology under garrison conditions. These research directions pursued both perspective planning and efficient vehicle deployment planning. In cooperation with the University of Transportation on scientific and methodological issues, results that were ready for use were created for the troops. With the introduction of computer technology, another field opened up for research. The use of the office computer and the mobile computing station 81 by the technical services of the troops was included in the research work of Allwelt, Knauthe, Kürbis and Stephan and the introduction of the results to the troops was in charge. The focus of further investigations was now the simulation of processes of technical security. This work was successfully brought to a remarkable level by Kürbis, Ullmann and Knauthe, and a number of officers' listeners. In particular, the status of the simulation of the process of restoring operational readiness on the battlefield of failed technology was highly appreciated.

Technical part

With the establishment of cabinets and laboratories, the construction of an engine test bench and its further improvement in the following years, as well as the construction of a building for the military engineering faculty (building I in 1962) with the test benches housed in it, the prerequisites for qualified technical training for officers and for research work in the technical field. A major direction of the research carried out by Oppermann and others was the diagnosis of internal combustion engines, including analog-digital measurement technology and IT, as well as the analysis and simulation of indicator diagrams of internal combustion engines. In close cooperation with VEB IFA Motorenwerke Nordhausen , studies of the mixture formation processes in diesel engines were carried out with the aim of improving their suitability for many substances and the results were put into practice. This research work included studies by Müsch, Bengs, Wagner and others on the economic energy conversion and the reliability of combustion engines as well as on electronic ignition systems and ignition mixture processes. At the same time, intensive work was carried out on the creation of a computer-aided reliability program, which was later used successfully in many branches of the GDR's economy. The research topic of computer-aided diagnosis of motor vehicles and motor vehicle components , which was primarily worked on by Runge and Brameyer in collaboration with the Kraftverkehrskombinat / Development Center Dresden, was also of importance .

The chairs of the technical services supervised scheduled and unscheduled aspirations of officers of the faculty of the military academy, the officers' colleges and the troops, as well as foreign armed forces.

There was close cooperation between the military academy and the technical universities of Dresden. This affected both the University of Transport, "Friedrich List" and the Technical University. Scientists from these universities regularly took part in scientific events held by the technical chairs, and teaching officers and civilian teachers from the military academy took an active part in the scientific life of the universities. The mutual appraisal and consultation of the research results obtained and the participation in doctoral committees were practiced very intensively.

An extraordinarily successful research work, primarily for the economy of the GDR, especially for the engine plant in Nordhausen, was carried out in the area of ​​"internal combustion engines" for economical energy conversion. A continuous exchange of experience on training and research took place with the military academies of the armed forces of the Warsaw Pact . The research results were presented and discussed in colloquia, conferences and other scientific events.

The research results of the technical chairs were published in textbooks, military journals and in materials of the military academy with various degrees of secrecy.
