Employment relationships of relatives

Service in the armed organs was considered military service , except in the branches of the People's Police, but had to be performed at least for the duration of basic military service.

Members of the armed organs were entitled to above-average pay and pensions. They were also granted special discounts. As a rule, the remuneration of members of the armed organs included remuneration based on rank, position and seniority.

The German taxpayer finances the supplementary pensions of the former members of the "armed organs" of the GDR with 1.5 billion euros annually (as of 2007, rising). In the 2016 federal budget, almost 2 billion euros are earmarked for the special pension systems.

Origin and use of the term

Like the organizational interweaving of intelligence services , police and military depicted in it, the term was modeled on the Soviet model. Even if the term thus officially encompassed the entirety of the forces deployed for national defense and internal order and armed with weapons , colloquially it was mostly used only in relation to the NVA.
