Irma Boom (born December 15, 1960 in Lochem ) is a Dutch typographer , teacher and designer . She works in Amsterdam and specializes in designing books. Thanks to the use of unusual materials, colors and formats, she transforms books into a visual and tactile experience.

Life

Irma Boom studied graphic design at the AKI Art Academy in Enschede. In 1991 she started her own business and founded Irma Boom Büro, which is active in both the cultural and commercial sectors on the national and international level. In 1993 she designed stamps for the Dutch post office PTT . Her clients include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam , Paul Fentener van Vlissingen (1941–2006), Inside Outside Museum, Boijmans Van Beuningen, Zumtobel, Ferrari, Vitra International, NAi Publishers and OMA / Rem Koolhaas, Koninklijke Tichelaar, and Camper.

She has been with Yale University in the USA since 1992. She also holds lectures and workshops around the world. She has won several book design awards.
In 2001, Boom was honored with the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig , making her the youngest recipient of the award for her entire work. In 2009 her graphic "Every Thing Design" was awarded the prize for the best Swiss poster of the year .

Boom worked for the SHV Holdings in Utrecht for five years on the SHV Think Book 1996–1896, which comprises a total of 2136 unpaginated pages. The Think Book was published in English and Chinese.

Her design for Weaving as Metaphor by Sheila Hicks received the title “The most beautiful book in the world” at the Leipzig Book Fair . Her books have been shown several times in various exhibitions and are an integral part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
