GDR tour 1959
The 1959 GDR tour took place from July 30th to August 8th. The stage race was held for the eleventh time and was won in the individual standings by Gustav-Adolf Schur from Leipzig . In the team classification , the GDR national team was ahead.
Attendees
A total of 15 teams took part, starting with six drivers, with the exception of SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt (5 active). Of the 89 drivers, 63 reached the finish in Potsdam . The tour had a strong international participation with six national teams. There were also six GDR sports clubs and a country sports team.

The tour was divided into nine stages and stretched over 1,428 kilometers from the start in East Berlin to the finish in Potsdam . The route led through 11 of the 14 GDR districts . The starting stage to Güstrow was the longest part of the day at 216 kilometers. The shortest route was 130 kilometers from Cottbus to Frankfurt (Oder) . Seven mountain awards were awarded on three stages between Dessau and Freiberg .
Race course
The XI. The GDR tour was all about Gustav-Adolf Schur, who drove for the GDR national team. He won five of the nine stages and was credited with one minute for each. In the overall standings, Schur was ultimately in front with over nine minutes. His fiercest opponent was the Dutchman Huub Zilverberg , who ended up in the top four of each of the five stages and among them was three times on the podium with third places. With the exception of the last stage, which was won by the German driver Wolf-Jürgen Edler , all of the day's victories went to the GDR national team. She won the team championship with a margin of 16 minutes over Belgium. Manfred Weißleder from the GDR national team was just as confidently ahead in the mountain classification .
