The route was divided into nine stages, the seventh day segment from Riesa to Dresden was divided into a 40 km time trial race and a circuit race in Dresden. The first stage from East Berlin to Rostock was the longest section of the tour at 239 kilometers. There were two mountain stages between Magdeburg and Gera , which led over the Harz Mountains and through the Thuringian Forest .
Race course
As in 1956, Eddy Pauwels, a driver from the Amsterdam suburban club WAC Hoboken, won the individual classification of the GDR tour in 1957 . Pauwels laid the foundation for the overall victory on the third stage when he moved up to second place in the overall classification after a 15-kilometer solo trip with the Berliner Kappel. The Belgian took over the overall leader's yellow jersey on the next stage after the previous leader Kirchhoff had lost track of Pauwels and thus lost a lot of time during the race. On the fifth part of the day, Pauwels was able to show off his mountain qualities and extend his lead in the overall standings to over three minutes. After that, he was already certain of overall victory because the competition did not have the tactical class to steal the yellow jersey from the Belgian. During the penultimate stage, Pauwels won another mountain classification and was able to extend his lead in the overall standings to another minute. The Berliner Gerhard Löffler was able to take this away from him with his victory of the day in East Berlin, but Pauwels remained the sovereign tour winner even though he did not achieve a single stage win. Equally superior, Pauwels won the mountain classification with 17 points ahead of Manfred Weißleder from Karl-Marx-Städter (8 points).
The team from SC DHfK Leipzig won the team competition with a clear lead of more than five minutes over SC Einheit Berlin . The Leipzig team had already taken the lead in the team classification after the first stage and only lost it to SC Einheit for one day. After that, the SC DHfK was able to temporarily extend its lead to seven minutes over the WAC Hoboken, which was able to maintain second place for several stages. Only after the seventh stage did the Belgians drop to third place, which they were able to defend until the finish in East Berlin.
