Rolf Töpfer

Rolf Töpfer (born November 12, 1932 ) is a former German cyclist who was active in the GDR in the 1950s .

Athletic career

In 1953, Töpfer made his first nationwide appearance with the start of the GDR tour . He drove for the sports association rotation , but retired early. When the SC Rotation Leipzig was founded in 1954 , it was accepted into the line-up of the cycling section. He won the title at the GDR cross-country championships in 1955, and it was the only one of his career. Back on the road, he won the one-day race Berlin – Cottbus – Berlin , won the Grand Diamond Prize in the same year , the Grand Raspa Prize in 1957 and the Plauen circuit race and also, meanwhile, for the SC DHfK Leipzigstarting, he achieved his best result in the GDR tour with fourth place. In the qualifying races for the national team for the International Peace Drive in 1958, he was one of the most noticeable drivers and was nominated for the Peace Drive team. In the 12-stage race he could not meet the expectations and came in the final standings as the worst GDR driver with 3:44 hours behind on the 70th place. In 1959 Töpfer won the lignite race in a sprint ahead of Schur and Adler and drove his last tour of the GDR, which he finished in 28th. His last notable victory was in 1960 in the one-day race Berlin – Angermünde – Berlin , a classic in GDR cycling. Because of his fighting spirit, reminiscent of the Austrian Max Bulla, he was nicknamed "Bulla".

Töpfer remained connected with cycling well into retirement age. In 1994 he was one of the founding members of RSV 94 Fürstenberg / Havel. In 2008, at the age of 75, he took part in the 2000 km International Touristic Peace Tour Berlin - Rome and in 2012 Töpfer started in the everyone's race at Neuseen Classics.
