Wolfgang Stamm (born November 3, 1941 in Finsterwalde ) is a former German cyclist.

Athletic career

His sporting career extended from 1956 to 1966. Stamm was a specialist in cyclo-cross races, but also competed in other disciplines. At the end of the 1960s there was a tendency to specialize in GDR cycling, as a result of which a cross-country racing department was formed at ASK Vorwärts Leipzig to which the tribe belonged. This was dissolved in 1962 as part of a resolution by the German Cycling Association of the GDR to abolish specialization in cross-country sports. In plain language, this decision meant that cyclo-cross sport no longer received any funding.

Wolfgang Stamm was GDR cross-country champion in 1962 and 1965. In 1960 he was third and in 1961 second in the title fights.

1961/62 was his most successful season. He won eight out of twelve races and was registered for the UCI World Championship in Luxembourg . However, due to the political conditions of the "Cold War" at the time , the GDR participants did not receive a visa for entry, so that he could not contest the World Cup. The year before, he had taken part in the title fights in Hanover and came 19th there.

In 1963 he won the Cross Country Championship of the Sports Associations of the Armies of the Warsaw Pact States .

Outside of the cyclo-cross races, Stamm and his club were able to take third place at the national track championships in team pursuit (1965) and second place (with Tächl as a partner) in two-man team driving. He started for the ASK Vorwärts in 1962 in the GDR tour , which he finished in 13th place.

Professional

Stamm learned the trade of carpenter and later worked as a sports instructor in the army.
