Michael Kaltofen

Michael Kaltofen (born March 19, 1942 ; † May 2015 ) was a German cyclist.

Athletic career

Kaltofen's specialty was the cyclo-cross race . Until 1960 he was active as a footballer. Then he took part in the final of the young touring riders' best determination and won the race. His winning prize was a racing bike . He started out for the Dynamo Döbeln sports club, before moving to SG Dynamo Dresden-Nord in 1966. Initially he competed in road races , in 1966 he discovered his preference for cross-country racing.

In this discipline he was three times GDR champion - in 1969, 1971 and 1975. He won his last title after an almost four-year break from competitions, during which he kept himself fit with trips to work. In 1968 and 1970 he finished second in the national championships, and in 1976 again third.

Internationally, he was the only GDR driver who could beat Western European top drivers in a competition. He succeeded on February 4, 1968 at the International Championship of the CSSR in cyclo-cross racing. At the UCI World Championships in cyclo-cross races in 1967, he was the best GDR driver with 27th place. After that, the GDR Association did not send any more athletes to these championships.

Professional

In 1961, Kaltofen completed an apprenticeship as a steel construction fitter, later studied and in September 1966 earned a degree in engineering for project planning.
