Günter Oldenburg (born July 1, 1930 in Daber , Pomerania ; † April 8, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German racing cyclist .

Career

Günter Oldenburg came to Berlin with his family as a displaced person in 1945 , where he started cycling at Derby Pankow in 1947 . From 1951 he started for Empor Nord Berlin , later for SC Einheit Berlin . He was GDR champion six times in various disciplines: in 1951 he won three titles, in the 1000 meter time trial , in the single pursuit and in the two-man team race (with Otto Busse ), and again in the time trial in 1952; twice he won the title in the cyclo-cross race (1954, 1957). He was also second in the championship in a tandem race with Georg Sternberg . In 1956 Oldenburg won Rund um die Hainleite , Rund um Dortmund and Berlin – Prenzlau – Berlin . In 1957 he was third in the overall ranking of the GDR tour . In 1958 he won two stages of the Tour of Egypt . He won numerous victories in two-man team driving on the Berlin Winter Railway .

In 1960 Günter Oldenburg left the GDR for West Berlin , where he lived until the end. There he drove for the BRC Grün-Weiß and was German runner-up in 1961 with the four-wheeler and won the Berlin championship in 1962. He started for the Bund Deutscher Radfahrer (BDR) in 1963 at the world championship in cross-country cycling in Calais , after having participated in the cross-country championship for the GDR in 1957 and was the best-placed GDR driver there with 13th place.

In total, Günter Oldenburg achieved around 300 successes. After the end of his active cycling career, he ran a renowned sports center in Berlin. From 1990 he started as a senior for the RC Charlottenburg and became vice world champion at the Masters in St. Johann in Tyrol and celebrated several successes in the pair time trial . In 1993 he won bronze in the senior championship for people over sixty. His younger brother Horst Oldenburg was also active as a cyclist, his son Bernd became German runner-up in the amateur road race in 1981 .
