Detlef Macha (born December 13, 1958 in Greiz ; † September 2, 1994 in Coburg ) was a German racing cyclist . He was a five-time world champion in track cycling.

Athletic career

Macha was initially active in athletics over the longer running distances. A school friend took him to a training race and he was immediately enthusiastic about cycling. He joined the BSG Progress Greiz (later Greika Greiz) and received his first racing bike after four months of training. After the children's and youth spartakiad in 1972, he was delegated to SC Turbine Erfurt.

Detlef Macha was one of the best German track cyclists and won a total of four world championship titles in this discipline. He won his first GDR championship title in 1975 in the team pursuit in the youth class A. In the same year he also won the team time trial title on the road with his club. From 1972 to 1985 he started for the Turbine Erfurt sports club , before working there as a cycling trainer from 1985 to 1989. Macha was also very successful as a road driver. In 1975 he won the international rally for juniors over five stages. In 1981 and 1984 he won the Campania Tour in Italy, and in 1982 the Hungarian multi-day Csepel Cup . Several times (1978, 82, 83) he won stages in the Tour of Thuringia . In 1984 he finished 8th in the GDR Tour , in 1985 he was 13th.

After the reunification he ran a cycling shop in Coburg . There he committed suicide in 1994.
