Gert Bongers
Gert Bongers (born August 22, 1946 in Voorst ) is a former Dutch cyclist and world champion.
In 1967 Gert Bongers became world champion in the single pursuit in front of a home crowd in Amsterdam and Dutch champion in this discipline. He also competed in the team time trial of this world championship, but came with his team (including Joop Zoetemelk ) only on a disappointing 11th place. The following year he became professional and second in the Dutch championship in the pursuit, in 1969 he won the title in this discipline. He also started in six six- day races , but without much success. In six-day races for amateurs, however, he was successful with his standard partner Piet de Wit , both of which won the Amsterdam race in 1967.
Then Bongers ended his short cycling career because he did not feel comfortable in the professional cycling environment. He also regretted having turned pro and not being able to take part in the Olympic Games . He became a successful businessman and has lived in Curaçao for many years .
