Hendrik "Henk" Nijdam (born September 26, 1935 in Eelderwolde , Groningen province , † April 30, 2009 in Breda ) was a Dutch cyclist.

Athletic career

Nijdam did not achieve his first victory among the amateurs until he was 21 in 1957, further successes in amateur races followed. In 1960 he became the first Dutch amateur champion in the singles pursuit ; by the end of his sports career he was a total of five times national champion in this discipline as a professional . Also in 1960 he started together with Jaap Oudkerk , Theo Nikkessen and Piet van der Lans in the team pursuit at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, where the Dutch foursome finished fifth. At the world championships in Leipzig in the same year he was runner-up in the single pursuit. In 1961 he became world champion in this discipline among amateurs and in 1962 among professionals.

Before Nijdam began his professional career in 1962, he won the Olympia's Tour and a stage of the International Peace Ride , where he was eliminated after a fall in the yellow jersey of the overall leader. He then signed his first contract with Team Flandria .

From 1963, Henk Nijdam mainly competed in street races. He took part in the Tour de France six times and won a stage each in 1964 and 1966 and only placed 50th in 1965 and 73rd in 1966 in the overall classification. When he last took part in the Tour de France in 1969 , Nijdam received a 15-minute time penalty for doping.

Nijdam started twice in the Vuelta a España . In 1966 he decided two stages and one half stage for himself, in 1967 another, but could not finish the tours both times.

1969 Henk Nijdam resigned from active cycling.

Miscellaneous

In 1962, Nijdam was named Sportsman of the Year in his home country . His son Jelle later also became a professional cyclist, wearing the yellow jersey for three stages of the Tour de France in 1987 and 1988 .

Since 2013, a dam for hikers and cyclists in the Hoornseplas recreation area near his birthplace Eederswolde has been named after him, Nijdam .
