Dirk Baert

Dirk Baert (born February 14, 1949 in Zwevegem ) is a former Belgian cyclist and world champion.

Dirk Baert suffered from polio in his youth , but was able to overcome the disease and go cycling. In 1969 he was Belgian champion (U 23) in the 1000 meter time trial on the track; the following year he won the national title in the tandem race with Willy De Bosscher . 1970 and 1974 to 1977 he was Belgian champion in pursuit, 1981 again. In his last race, he was the Belgian Omnium Champion in 1984 after finishing second to Patrick Sercu seven times .

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , Dirk Baert competed in the 1000-meter time trial on the track, but was only able to take 18th place. 1971 Dirk Baert won the world title in the pursuit in the title fights in Varese ; at the World Championships in 1972 and 1975 he was third.

From 1970 to 1984 Baert competed in professional cycling. During this time he achieved a total of 83 victories, many of them in smaller road races almost exclusively in Belgium. In 1984 he resigned from competitive cycling.

After the end of his active career, Baert worked as a trainer, u. a. For two years with the Belgian national road team (amateurs). For two years he was in charge of PR for the Panasonic team . Baert coached the Belgian national railway team for another two years, followed by Belgian road champions Ine Wannijn and Ludivine Henrion . He also works as an insurance broker and sports advisor.
