Tiemen Groen
Tiemen Groen (born July 6, 1946 in Follega , today to De Fryske Marren ) is a former Dutch cyclist and world champion.
In the 1960s, Tiemen Groen was one of the dominant amateur racers on the track in the Netherlands. Three times he was world champion of the amateurs in the single pursuit and four times he won the Dutch title in this discipline and in the 1000 meter time trial . In 1966 he also took second place in the team time trial with the Dutch team at the UCI Road World Championships in Cologne .
Groen took part in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and was the gold favorite in the singles pursuit. There were public suspicions that the winner of the semi-finals, Giorgio Ursi , was doped. Other sources say that Groen was very homesick. Although his father, a Frisian farmer, had traveled from the Netherlands as quickly as possible, the son was unable to call up his performance.
In 1967 Groen became a professional and in the same year he won the world title in the single pursuit , but felt uncomfortable in the professional scene and ended his career the following year. His best result in road races as a professional was 8th place in the Grand Prix des Nations when Felice Gimondi won in 1967.
He opened an antique shop. From 1986 to 1995 he traveled around the world in a truck with a trailer and sent the antiques he found on the way to the Netherlands for sale. In 1995 Tiemen Groen traveled to South Africa and has lived there ever since. He campaigns publicly for the rights of the black population.
