Jack Bobridge (born July 13, 1989 in Adelaide ) is a retired Australian track and road cyclist .
Athletic career
Jack Bobridge was the 2006 junior track cycling world champion in the team pursuit in Ghent, Belgium . At the Oceania Games he also won the bronze medal in scratch . In 2007 he rode for the Toshiba Australia track cycling team . That season, he became the Australian Champion in Junior Team Pursuit and Madison 's Elite Class. At the Junior World Championships in Aguascalientes , he defended the team pursuit title with the national team. At the Track Cycling World Cup 2007/2008 he was third in the team pursuit in Sydney and they won in Los Angeles .
On the road, Jack Bobridge was the 2007 Australian junior pair time trial champion. He was also third overall at the Tour of the Murray River. His first contract with an international cycling team was in 2008 with the Continental Team Southaustralia.com-AIS .
In January 2009 Bobridge was a two-time Australian U23 champion on the road, road racing and time trial . He celebrated further successes in the Thuringia Tour and the Tour of Japan , in which he won two stages each. However, he achieved his greatest success at the end of the year at the road world championships in Mendrisio : There he became time trial world champion in the U23 class.
In 2010, Bobridge joined the UCI ProTeam Garmin-Transitions , with which he stayed until 2011. In his first year there he was able to win a stage on the Eneco Tour . In 2011 he became the Australian road champion. After riding for the ProTeams Orica GreenEdge and Belkin-Pro Cycling Team , he got a contract with the Australian Continental Team Budget Forklifts in 2015 . As a member of Australia's national team, he won the first stage of the Tour Down Under 2015 . In 2016 he was again Australian road champion.
During these years Bobrdige remained successful on the track. At the UCI Track World Championships in 2010 he was world champion in team pursuit. In the same year he won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in both the individual pursuit and the team pursuit. On February 2, 2011, Jack Bobridge set a new world record in the 4,000-meter single pursuit at the Australian Track Championships in Sydney with 4: 10.534 minutes and thus also conquered the Australian championship in this discipline. He has also won numerous Australian championship titles on the track.
On January 31, 2015, Jack Bobridge missed improving the world hour record . He covered 51.3 kilometers at the DISC Velodrome in Melbourne. So he was missing around 500 meters to improve the record of Austrian Matthias Brändle .
After a year with the Continental Team Budget Forklifts , Bobridge joined the UCI WorldTeam Trek-Segafredo in 2016 and became Australian elite road champion for the second time at the start of the season after a 90-kilometer solo journey with a 2:52 advantage over Cameron Meyer .
In the same year he was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and together with Alexander Edmondson , Michael Hepburn and Sam Welsford won the silver medal in the team pursuit.
In November 2016, Bobridge announced that he was being forced to retire from cycling for health reasons. The 27-year-old suffers from rheumatoid arthritis , which is why he has been treated with medication for five years. After he hadn't found a new team after the Olympic Games and therefore trained less, he noticed that his health had improved. His medication became known in September after hackers released WADA's files . Bobridge said he was allowed to take the arthritis drugs with permission.
Private
Bobridge was married to former Australian cyclist Josephine Tomic . The couple lived in Spain until 2016. After retiring from his cycling career, Bobridge moved to Perth, Australia, and he and his wife separated.
In August 2017, Jack Bobridge was charged with drug possession and trafficking in Perth . In July 2019, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
