Neil Stephens (born October 1, 1963 in Canberra ) is an Australian sporting director in cycling and a former cyclist .

Athletic career

Neil Stephens was a professional from 1985 to 1998 . At first he mainly competed in races in his home country, such as the Herald Sun Tour , the Midlands Tour and the Memorial Michael Toyne . He was Australian road racing champion twice - in 1991 and 1994 .

From 1990 onwards, Stephens drove increasingly races in Europe, such as the Tour of Britain and the Tour of Portugal . Between 1992 and 1998 he competed seven times in the Tour de France , but was never able to place himself far in front. In 1997 he won the 17th stage from Friborg to Colmar . In 1996 he took part in the road race of the Olympic Games in Atlanta and finished 19th. In the same year he was tenth in the individual time trial of the road world championships

At the end of 1998 he resigned from active cycling in the wake of the Festina affair .

doping

A few days before the start of the 1998 Tour de France , a supervisor of the Festina team , Willy de Voet, was arrested in France. 400 ampoules of Epo and anabolic steroids were found in the masseur's car . In the course of the investigation, Neil Stephens admitted to having been doped with Epo, but this was done without his knowledge. He believed that it was vitamin supplements. He was never sanctioned.

Professional

After the end of his active career, Stephens worked for various teams as a sports director. From 2012 to 2018 he worked for the Australian team Orica GreenEdge . When it became known that Stephens and his Festina teammate Matthew White , who had been banned for doping, had been appointed to the Orica GreenEdge team, critical voices were raised. In 2019 he became Sporting Director at UAE Team Emirates .
