In 1952, Eddie Smith was part of a group of Australian riders, John Beasley , Dean Whitehorn and Peter Anthony , who traveled to Europe to compete in the Tour de France . A fund had previously been set up and money was collected to finance the trip. In preparation, they initially took part in smaller races in Europe, but were overwhelmed as they were unfamiliar with races with a mass start. Only John Beasley finally got the chance to contest the tour as a member of the Luxembourg team under team captain Charly Gaul .
