Eddie Smith (born September 7, 1926 in Canberra , † July 4, 1997 in Adelaide ) was an Australian cyclist .
In 1948, 1949 and 1951 Eddie Smith won the Tour of Victoria , in 1953 a stage and the overall ranking of the Tour of South Australia . 1954 and 1955 he was Australian road racing champion . In 1954 he also won the Sydney – Melbourne race after winning four stages. In 1955 he won Melbourne-Warrnambool and the following year the Tour of Tasmania .
In 1952, Eddie Smith was part of a group of Australian riders, John Beasley , Dean Whitehorn and Peter Anthony , who traveled to Europe to compete in the Tour de France . A fund had previously been set up and money was collected to finance the trip. In preparation, they initially took part in smaller races in Europe, but were overwhelmed as they were unfamiliar with races with a mass start. Only John Beasley finally got the chance to contest the tour as a member of the Luxembourg team under team captain Charly Gaul .
