Federico Sacco (born February 5, 1864 in Fossano , † October 2, 1948 in Turin ) was an Italian geologist and paleontologist .

From 1897 to 1935 he was professor of geology at the Turin Polytechnic and taught paleontology at the same time.

He mapped for the geological survey of Italy in the tertiary basin of Piedmont , in the Abruzzo , in Cuneo , Ceva , Genoa , Bologna , Imola , Faenza , Forli , Rimini , Ancona , Jesi , Fermo , Macerata , Pesaro , on Monte Falterona and in Pontremoli . He dealt with the geology of the Appennines , Quaternary geology (including moraines in Veneto) and glacier research, tertiary mollusks of Piedmont and Lombardy and with hydrology and wrote popular science books on cosmology and evolution.

He was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1914 and a full member from 1925 and since 1918 a member of the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino . He was president of the Società Geologica Italiana and the Italian Alpine Club .

Sacco was a passionate mountaineer and cave explorer.
