history

It was founded on October 23, 1863 on the initiative of Quintino Sella in Turin . The first president of the association was Ferdinando Perrone di San Martino, vice-president Bartolomeo Gastaldi. A highlight in scientific mountaineering history was the first ascent of K2 in 1954 by an expedition led by the CAI.

The Club Alpino Accademico Italiano (CAAI) has existed in the CAI since 1904 .

In 1954, the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico mountain rescue service was established as a sub-organization of the CAI. The CAI is a founding member of the multilateral agreement of reciprocal rights to smelters , which was introduced in 1978.
