David McKenzie (cyclist)

David McKenzie (born August 6, 1974 in Ballarat ) is a retired Australian cyclist .

Athletic career

David McKenzie, nicknamed Macca , was a professional from 1997 to 2005 . McKenzie drove most of the successes in his home country, including the national road championship (1998), eleven stages of the Herald Sun Tour , victory at Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic 2001 and the Bay Criterium Series (1996).

The most sensational success of McKenzie's career was the stage win in Teramo at the Giro d'Italia 2000 , after he had driven 120 kilometers (out of a total of 171 kilometers) alone at the top as a soloist. This stage win by McKenzies was also the greatest success of the Linda McCartney cycling team, which had only existed for two years .

In 2006 McKenzie retired from cycling after winning the Tour of Perth overall standings .
