Giro d'Italia 2000

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 83rd Giro d'Italia was held in 21 stages from May 13th to June 4th, 2000 and won by Stefano Garzelli from Varese .

The mountain specialist Francesco Casagrande took over the Maglia Rosa with a stage victory on the ninth stage and fought an eventful duel on the later mountain stages with the eventual overall winner Garzelli, who was ruled out by his teammate Marco Pantani , who won the event in 1998 and in 1999 due to an increased hematocrit value was supported. Casagrande lost considerable time to his fellow competitors in the two longer individual time trials on the flat 11th and mountainous 20th stage and Garzelli took the lead after the last time trial.
