San Michele al Tagliamento is a city with 11,865 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) within the metropolitan city of Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is best known for summer tourism in the Bibione district.

geography

As the full name shows, the city is located on the right bank of the Tagliamento River , about 64 kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of Venice . It is almost 20 kilometers to the coast in the south. On the opposite side of the river, which forms the border between the regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, lies the town of Latisana .

The neighboring municipalities are Caorle , Fossalta di Portogruaro , Latisana (UD), Lignano Sabbiadoro (UD), Morsano al Tagliamento (PN), Portogruaro , Ronchis (UD) and Varmo (UD).

history

The first traces of human life go back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. When the lagoon on which San Michele extends today was inhabited by Venetians. From 181 BC The settlement of the Romans marked the beginning of the reclamation and agricultural development of the whole area. Since the late 18th century, archaeological excavations have discovered black and white mosaic floors , copper coins , broken glass and pottery that date back to the Roman Empire .

Bibione, a fraction of San Michele and a seaside resort on the Adriatic coast , about 20 kilometers from the main town, has about 3000 inhabitants and is mostly visited by tourists from Germany and Austria. In the 2000s the number of visitors from Holland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Ireland rose sharply. The city offers around 100,000 beds in hotels, campsites or holiday apartments (Villaggio). The economically most important months are May to September, as the weather is otherwise often too cool for swimming. Many shops and the beach infrastructure are only open during the season, between May and September.

One of the traditions of the city is that a weekly market takes place every Tuesday between 7 a.m. and 12 noon on the market square (otherwise the parking lot) in front of Luna Park, Bibione's amusement park. Various things such as clothes, hand or beach towels, fish, cheese, salami and fruit are sold there.

Bibione is located in the area between the Adriatic Sea and the Tagliamento River . Based on the nature of the soil and excavations, it can be assumed that Bibione was a small group of islands connected by a narrow strip of land with the lagoon and the mainland, those insulae bibioni or Bibiones , which are mentioned in some Roman and medieval documents. Parts of this possible archipelago still exist in the lagoons today.

History of Bibione

After the fall of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity , Bibione was given to the Bishops of Concordia and centuries of neglect followed for the islands. Pine forests spread over the area. At the beginning of the 20th century the actual reclamation began by building drainage canals and dams. Around 1950, when the work was finished, the pine forests and the sandy beach remained. In the following years, with the construction of the first holiday accommodations, Bibione became a tourist destination.

Bibione is divided into the districts Lido dei Pini, Bibione Pineda, Bibione Spiaggia and Lido del Sole.

Bibione today

Above all Germans and Austrians, but also Italians, Easterners and other Europeans (depending on the season and district) spend their holidays on the very flat sandy beaches of Bibione. The cityscape is characterized by the numerous hotels , guesthouses and campsites , the number of beds of which exceeds the population of Bibione by 40 times. Bibione is particularly popular with families, and childcare is offered in the hotels and on the beach. In the “Lido dei Pini” district, an approximately 300 meter wide stretch of beach for dogs and their owners has been set up (“Lido del Faro” beach section). Water sports of all kinds (windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, fun trips to the sea) are offered on the beach. Bars and discos complete the offer in the evening.

Since the summer of 2019, Bibiones beach has been a smoke-free area except for demarcated areas. This also includes the area of the parasols. The area between the sea and the first row of parasols had already been subject to a smoking ban since summer 2014, making it the first smoke-free beach in Italy.

In August 2017 the first inclusive beach section Bibione was inaugurated, among other things with easier beach / sea access (for example through reserved parking spaces, wheelchairs for swimming and lifts), interpreters for the deaf and mute or special play facilities.

From May to September there is a fireworks display at Piazzale Zenith every month at either 10.30pm or 11pm.

traffic

The Venice – Trieste railway runs through the northern part of the city . The nearest train station is in neighboring Latisana. The A 4 Turin - Milan - Trieste (La Serenissima) autostrada runs a little further north and can be reached via the Latisana junction .

Town twinning

As part of the Twinning Eco-Management Systems project, San Michele has entered into a partnership with the Hungarian municipality of Balatonalmádi , a seaside resort on Lake Balaton .
