Lignano Sabbiadoro [ liɲaːno sabːi̯adɔːro ] ( Friulian : Lignan ) is a seaside town on the Italian Adriatic coast in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia ( Friuli Venezia Giulia ) with 6,837 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). The place consists of three parts: Sabbiadoro (in the northeast, eponymous for the entire place), Pineta and Riviera (at the mouth of the Tagliamento).

geography

Lignano extends in the form of a peninsula on the north-eastern half of the Tagliamento deltas between the lagoon of Marano and the open Adria . The landscape is flat and until a few decades ago was a swamp area that was infected with malaria .

The municipality is bounded in the north by the Litorale Veneto . This connects the Tagliamento with the Marano lagoon.

Districts

Lignano Sabbiadoro is the center of the peninsula and consists of numerous hotels, bars, shops and holiday apartments. A central shopping street, which is mainly filled with life in summer, leads from Viale Centrale via the newly built pedestrian zone to Terrazza a Mare at the tip of the peninsula. The beach in Sabbiadoro is divided into nineteen different sections, each with a different shade of shade. There are numerous fountains and squares in the city, and there is also a church in Sabbiadoro. The one-way street along Sabbiadoro Beach is called Lungomare Trieste .

Lignano Pineta is a little quieter in the middle of the three districts and was created in the 1950s. The streets lead outwards in a spiral at a distance of 100 meters from the center of Pineta. Pineta is located in a pine forest in which there are hotels, apartments and houses. The houses are a bit apart. The only shopping street is in the center of Pineta. It leads from the church to the sea and has shops and cafes. In Pineta, the beach is divided into five sections. The road along the beach is called Lungomare Adriatico in Pineta .

Lignano Riviera is located at the mouth of the Tagliamento and is even quieter than Pineta. There are only a few hotels in Riviera, but various campsites, a golf course and a port on the Tagliamento. The border between Pineta and Riviera is the Kursaal with the thermal baths of Lignano, the Tagliamento separates the Riviera from Bibione and also represents the border between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Terrazza a Mare

The Terrazza a Mare

The Terrazza a Mare, a concrete walkway with buildings at the end of the sea, was inaugurated in 1972. There is a bar on top of it.

traffic

A four-lane road, the SS 354 , has been leading to Lignano since the 1950s .

City beautification

The port in Sabbiadoro
The Marano lagoon in the vicinity of Lignano

Many streets and squares have been redesigned in Lignano in recent years. These renovations are intended to attract more tourists to Lignano again.

Some examples:

  • The pedestrian zone in Sabbiadoro runs through the entire city and is single-lane during the day. It was built between 2003 and 2006.
  • The square in front of the church in Pineta was redesigned in 2007.
  • Furthermore, there were efforts in 2002 to connect Pineta with Sabbiadoro on the coast by a common coastal road, but this plan was dropped again.

history

The name Lignano for the area of the current city (which fell to the Republic of Venice in 1420 ) is documented from the 15th century and possibly indicates an owner named Linunus. The Venetian Doges enfeoffed various noble families with the land in the course of history. One of them, the Vendramin family in Latisana , had the St. Zacharias Church built in the then hamlet of Pineda (in what is now the Pineta district) in the 16th century. It mainly served the fishermen, because Pineda itself was too small for a church (in 1466 it consisted of only two houses). There was later a control station for the port of Lignano, which in 1813 had 70 inhabitants.

Nevertheless, today's Lignano is a very young city. Before its development, the peninsula consisted of swampland and tree land and was only inhabited by a few farming families all year round. In addition, there were the seasonal stays of the fishermen from Marano, who temporarily lived in wooden huts ( casoni ) clad with reeds .

The oldest part is Sabbiadoro (in German: golden sand ), which was already used as a bathing beach by boat from Marano at the end of the 19th century . 1903–1904 a wooden bathing establishment was built and used mainly by Sunday excursionists.

The first hotel (the Marin owned by the Mayor of Marano) was built in 1903, followed by the Friuli and Vittoria hotels . Nevertheless, the further development of Lignano was questionable at the time because of the swamp-related malaria and suffered another setback as a result of the First World War.

In 1924 the first lake terrace (on the site of today's Terrazza al mare , a project by the architect Provino Valle) was completed, with which Lignano's stagnant development picked up again. Another important point was the better land connection through a new road from Latisana to Lignano with a rotating bridge over an intermediate canal, as well as the eradication of malaria by draining the wetlands. In the 1930s, a children's home and a church were built. At that time Lignano counted around 60,000 mostly Italian summer visitors. In 1935, the addition Sabbiadoro was added to the place name for advertising reasons.

In the 1950s, Lignano Pineta (named after the pine forest there) was founded southwest of Sabbiadoro. There, Marcello D'Olivio realized a very unusual urban development plan: a street that leads outwards in a spiral starting from the center of Pineta. The individual turns of this spiral are 100 meters apart.

In 1959 Lignano became an independent municipality. The mass tourism caused by the economic boom then increased the number of holiday guests from 1.8 million (early 1960s) to over 6 million (1975). This record has not been reached since then.
