After the end of October 1917, the 2nd Italian army in the Battle of Caporetto had been beaten and German and Austria-Hungarian troops from the upper Isonzo in the Friuli broke, the fighting at the lower Isonzo third Italian army in the direction had Piave retire to a To escape enclosure and annihilation. In order to enable the orderly withdrawal of this army, the II. Italian Cavalry Brigade with the regiments Genova Cavalleria and Lancieri di Novara protected them against the units of the Central Powers advancing somewhat to the north . On October 29th and 30th, 1917 there was a bloody battle near Pozzuolo del Friuli , in which the 2nd Cavalry Brigade tried together with the Bergamo Infantry Brigade to temporarily stop the German-Austrian advance. The bitter two-day fighting in and around the town of Pozzuolo del Friuli claimed hundreds of lives. The two Italian cavalry regiments were almost completely wiped out in the attacks, which were often described as suicidal .
Thanks to this sacrifice, the 3rd Italian Army was able to withdraw safely to the Piave , the lower reaches of which they defended in the subsequent battles of the Piave .
In the center of Pozzuolo del Friuli there is now an equestrian monument, where a commemorative event takes place every 30 October (today the Italian Cavalry Day). An Italian tank division was named after Pozzuolo del Friuli in the 1950s, and today the place name bears, among other things, a brigade of the Italian army .
