The municipality of Gonars is located near the Stella River in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region .
The municipality has 4684 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and borders the municipalities of Bagnaria Arsa , Bicinicco , Castions di Strada , Palmanova , Porpetto , Santa Maria la Longa and Torviscosa .
The Gonars concentration camp was located in the immediate vicinity of the village from 1942 until the capitulation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1943 . Slovenes and Croats were interned in this camp. By interning such prisoners, the fascist regime wanted to prevent young men from becoming partisans in the Yugoslav territories occupied by Italy, which included the southern part of Slovenia up to the capital Ljubljana.
