history

Since ancient times, the place along the main commercial artery through the Eisental has always played an important role in transport and as a resting place for travelers, as the finds of bronze objects, coins and descriptions of Romanesque origin prove.

The first living sign, however, is the establishment of the parish of San Martino in 1199, which was first directed by the Benedictines , then, from the 14th century, by priests appointed in the Moggio Abbey. The parish church of San Martino is first mentioned in a document in 1119, rebuilt in 1767 and consecrated in 1809. The bell tower was in 1701 after the plans of Venzoner Pietro Zarnolo built. After being destroyed by the 1976 earthquake , it is currently still in the reconstruction phase. Silvio Pellico stopped here in 1822 when he was taken to the dungeon in the fortress Spielberg near Brno in Moravia .

Mountain hike

A trip to the old Borgo Cros is interesting, where the few rural homes that were spared from the earthquake are located. The mountain village can be reached after a 30-minute walk via a path that begins at the bridge over the Serai river - in the Povici di Sotto district - and crosses a large pine grove. The mountain village (Borgo), which is about 800 m high, is located on a plateau from where you can admire the panorama over the Résia valley with the Canin massif.

Origins of people and language

In the sparsely populated, secluded valley, language and customs developed similarly to the isolated mountain valleys of Carinthia - namely, they hardly moved away from their origins. The Slavic dialect has been preserved from the 6th century when a Slav tribe settled in the valley, the music is completely atypical for the area and the dances seem to come straight from the Middle Ages . Many ruins can still be seen that can be traced back to the 1976 earthquake. Many of the residents of the five villages emigrated, many of them as scissors grinders who traveled around the area by bike .

economy

Today the place lives mainly from tourism . On hikes or excursions by car in the area you can enjoy the natural beauty of the valley, enjoy the culinary delights of the Friulian cuisine in several restaurants, get to know the culture and history of the place or in one of the shops souvenirs , garden decoration articles and acquire everyday items. Hotels are available to the weary traveler. In one of the grill stations they even brew and serve their own beer .
