Verzegnis ( Furlanisch Verzegnis , locally Verzegnas ) is a municipality in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Friuli , Italy with 875 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Verzegnis is one of 28 parishes in Carnia . The municipality consists of the following four main localities:

  • Chiaicis ( Cjaiças )
  • Chiaulis ( Cjaulas / Cjauias ) (sede municipale)
  • Intissans ( Dintissjans )
  • Villa ( Vila ),

also from three smaller villages:

  • Santo Stefano ( San Stepin )
  • Riviasio ( Ruviâs )
  • Marzovallis ( Marzovalas ) - this last was created in the late 1980s

Verzegnis is also the name of the mountain (1,915 m high) that towers above the four districts and also that of the lake that was artificially created by SADE in 1957. The SADE dammed the torrent on Ambiesta (Dimbiesta) to the center of the hydroelectric power plant of Somplago to provide (Somplât).

In the past there were four other village centers:

  • Assais ( Dassaias )
  • Duebis ( Dueibas )
  • Pusea ( pusjea )
  • Pozzis ( Poças ),

which were finally abandoned by the original inhabitants in the course of the 20th century (usually a migration to the larger districts). Recently some houses in Pozzis have been restored (mainly by people who do not live in Verzegnis).

From December to March, ski facilities (two downhill slopes and one cross-country ski run) are open in the village of Sella Chianzutan.

history

An interesting historical reference to the ancient role of Verzegnis in Carnia is shown by the ruined tower (on the Mazeit hill in the Villa district), which was unearthed during archaeological excavations from 1989 to 1990 and then again in 2000. The investigations carried out on the rediscovered finds rank the Ritter building between the 12th and 13th centuries AD. It is believed that the tower was part of the system of fortifications built to defend the eastern crossings of the Alps, because its strategic position enabled surveillance of the upper Tagliamento valley, from the southern entrance to the road to Julium Carnicum and Norikum .

The church of Sankt Martin in Villa is first mentioned as a castle church in 1072.

  • The obsessed with forgiveness

In the winter of 1878 a village girl, a certain Margerita Vidusson, claimed to be possessed by the devil. This spread to 24 girls and one carbineer. The possessed screamed and blasphemed in incomprehensible languages and had extraordinary and animal powers. Everything was ended by the intervention of the doctor and enlightened Udine freemason Giuseppe Chiappolino. Pietro Spirito's novel The Possessed of Despair reports on these incidents .

  • Verzegnis: capital of Carnia

During the Second World War is a unique event contributed to: October 1944 to April 1945, the village was of a Cossack - Regiment occupied, so it became the "center" of Carnia. The Cossacks had been recruited by the Nazis to counteract the partisan movement, which was very active in Carnia. More than 1,500 people, soldiers and civilians , united in the event with horses and herds and established the headquarters of the Tèrek-Stravropol regiment there. In the promises made by the Germans to the Cossacks in return for their collaboration , Carnia was to become the Cossack country in northern Italy, and accordingly they settled in the southern part of Carnia, choosing the village of Villa von Verzegnis as their "main town" where the chief of the Cossacks was quartered.

The "road" leads from the Chianzutan saddle (in the village of "la Canaleta") and crosses the cheese dairies "Mongranda" (still grazed in summer!), "Presaldo" (now an alpine hut) and "Val" (not in use, but in the state of renovation).

Some houses of the 16./17. Century (notable two buildings in Chiaulis and Chiaicis) and also the church of Saint Martin in Villa, built between 1730 and 1775 on the remains of a former Gothic structure, survived the earthquakes of 1928 and 1976.

  • The "water of paradise" (La âga dal Paradîsj / L'acqua del paradiso)

On the road that connects Villa Santina with Chiaicis, above Rivasio, there is a source of water, generally known as wholesome and healing, to such an extent that it has earned the appeal of “water of paradise”. Although it has always been known to the population of Verzegnis, in the post-war period it quickly became increasingly neglected due to a lack of care. Fortunately, thanks to the initiative of some volunteers , the spring has recently been restored and provides its “miracle water” all year round. If you drive past this very easily accessible place, you will quite often come across residents of Verzegnis and the neighboring communities, who keep going there to fill the water in bottles.

The modification of the languages spoken in Verzegnis furlanischen language falls into the class that will be characterized, "altered" by the words which have the ending -a to the effect that they, rather than end up like the female plural in -e, to the –A another –s is added: The Italian singular word “casa” becomes “case” in the plural form, whereas in Furlanic “cjasa” (singular) becomes “cjasas” (plural). • The Leons , the Rocs , the Cinisjârs and the Vilots

The Verzegneser, who among themselves (but this tradition is slowly disappearing) use general nicknames that refer to the inhabitants of the four main districts. The inhabitants of Chiaicis are called "Leons" (= lions); those of Intissan's “Rocs” (= ram); those of Chiaulis "Cinisjârs" (= ash pits); that of Villa “Vilots” (untranslatable). Curiously, there are two fountains with sculptures on the main square of Chiaicis and Intissans, which represent a lion and a ram as a reference.
