Richard Nonas

Richard Nonas (* 1936 in New York City ) is an American minimalist , sculptor and photographer.

life and work

Richard Nonas was born in 1936 and grew up in Brooklyn . He studied American literature and social anthropology at the University of Michigan , Lafayette College , Columbia University, and the University of North Carolina . He worked as an anthropologist for 10 years , doing field research on the American Indians in northern Ontario and Yukon in Canada and southern Arizona . He spent two years in a village with 50 inhabitants in northern Mexico . Richard Nonas has taught at the University of North Carolina and Queens College, City University of New York .

His anthropological work in the Mexican desert forms the basis for his examination of how space is perceived. As an artist, Nonas is self-taught . Nonas went to Spain, later, in 1968, to Paris. He has lived and worked in New York City since 1970, where he quickly made contacts with Gordon Matta-Clark , Alanna Heiss and other artists and curators .

Wooden beams , granite stones and steel slabs are some of the materials Nonas works with. He installs floor and wall objects in interiors, in various landscapes and as art in public spaces .
