The Musée d'art moderne et contemporain ( MAMCO , Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art ) is an art museum in Geneva that was planned since 1973 and opened in its own building in 1994 . It is located in a former industrial building at 10 rue des Vieux-Grenadiers in the Plainpalais district of Geneva .

history

Since 1973 the AMAN (Association pour un Musée d'Art Moderne) endeavored to found a museum for modern and contemporary art in Geneva. It was not until September 22, 1994 that the museum opened at its current location. The first director was Christian Bernard, who was replaced by Lionel Bovier at the turn of the year 2015/2016. Françoise Ninghetto was chief curator and deputy director from 1999 to 2017 . When it opened, AMAN called itself the Association des amis du MAMCO (Association of Friends of MAMCO) and today has around 1000 members. Since January 1, 2005, the museum has been run by FONDAMCO, a foundation under public law in which the Museum Foundation, the city and the canton of Geneva are involved.

Location

The museum is located in a disused scientific instrument factory now known as the Bac (Bâtiment d'art contemporain). There you will also find the art gallery Center d'art contemporain Genève (CAC), which has been associated with the Center pour l'Image Contemporaine (CIC) since 2010 , and the Art Foundation of the City of Geneva Fonds municipal d'art contemporain de la Ville de Genève ( FMAC).

The building in which the MAMCO is located today was the former location of the SIP (Société genevoise d'instruments de physique) , which was founded in 1862 by Auguste de la Rive and Marc Thury. Thanks to the development of the jig boring machine MP (Machine à pointer) , which enabled machine production with a precision in the range of thousandths of a millimeter, SIP achieved a breakthrough in mechanical series production in 1921. This made SIP one of the most respected machine builders in the world. Due to economic bottlenecks, SIP sold the properties in stages from 1983. The premises of Plainpalais met with the interest of cultural workers. Finally, in 1987, the city of Geneva bought parts of the property to create a space for cultural exhibitions in the center of the city. Architecturally little was changed in the house, not only for financial reasons, but because Christian Bernard wanted to keep the original room in its shape as much as possible. The MAMCO logo, with the graphically displayed lines between the letters, still visualizes the history of the development of measuring devices at this location.
