Skissernas museum ( Museum of Sketches ) is an art museum in the southern Swedish city of Lund .

history

The museum was founded in 1934 by the then professor of art history at Lund University , Ragnar Josephson , as an archive for decorative arts for the faculty of art history. Josephson's intention was to illustrate the creative process of a work of art from the idea to the finished work. There were sketches , models and photographs of public art collected since these were particularly suitable as a study material according to Josephson. The invitation to create such an archive came from the artist Georg Pauli at an exhibition in Lund as early as 1933 .

The first archival material consisted of purchased postcards about decorative arts. The archive's initiative was soon taken up by artists across Sweden and the number of donations and purchase inquiries increased. For example, Prinz Eugen also donated material to the archive.

After the archive continued to grow, in 1941 the University of Josephson left a former teachers' college as a new location on the corner of Sölvegatan and Finngatan , not far from the university library . The upstream sculpture garden of the museum protrudes into the park of the Helgonabacken . From then on, the archive was made accessible to the public and continued as a museum. The museum has been part of Lund University as a separate unit since 1979.

today

The museum and the non-public archive now house around 30,000 items from around the world. The development of the creative creation process, the "birth of the work of art", is the focus of the activity according to the self-description. In addition to the permanently accessible permanent collection , temporary exhibitions are also shown every year. The permanent exhibition is spread over two floors and is geographically divided. The Swedish, International, Mexican and Sculpture Hall are on the ground floor. One floor above there are sketches and models from the rest of the Nordic countries .
