Pauli studied from 1872 to 1875 at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm and made several study trips to Paris and Italy . In 1887 he married the artist Hanna Hirsch . From 1893 to 1897 he was director of the drawing and painting school at the Gothenburg Museum and then he spent another year in Italy. From 1905 Pauli lived in Nacka near Stockholm, but most of the winter he spent in France.

Pauli belonged to the artist group Opponenterna , which demanded a modernization of the training at the Swedish Art Academy. From 1891 he was a member of the Swedish Artists Association. In addition to his work as a painter, he wrote articles on art history that were published in specialist journals.

Pauli took on many decorative commissions and created frescoes for Gothenburg's old museum ( trade and seafaring , science and art and Parnassus - completed in 1896) and various teaching institutions. In Jönköping he created cubist nudes , making him one of the first Swedish artists to use this style.
