Stockholms Handelsbank was founded in 1871 and on July 1st of the same year the bank opened its first branch on Kornhamnstorg in Stockholm's old town . The company was first listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1873 . The bank developed into one of Sweden's leading commercial banks under the leadership of the banker Louis Fraenkels, who ran the bank from 1893 to 1911. In 1905 the bank moved to the building on Kungsträdgården , where the company is still based today. Between 1914 and 1919 other Swedish institutes were acquired . The bank was hit hard by the Great Depression in the 1920s and suffered high write-downs and lost profits.

In 1970 Jan Wallander became CEO of the company and realigned it in the following years by founding organizationally largely independent regional banks and abolishing the budget that had been practiced since the 1970s. The first profit-sharing program for employees, "Octogons", was launched in 1973 and, from 1980, the company expanded outside of Sweden. During the Swedish banking crisis from 1990 to 1992 , the bank suffered heavy losses, but was the only major Swedish bank not to be dependent on state aid. In 1999, the branch network in Great Britain was expanded .

Commitment in the German-speaking area

In 1972 Svenska Handelsbanken opened its first agency in Germany, which was converted into a subsidiary in 1989. The aim of the business activity was to acquire corporate customers who also did business on the Scandinavian market. In the course of Sweden's accession to the European Union , the subsidiary was transformed into a branch based in Frankfurt am Main, and another branch followed in Hamburg in 1996 .

In Switzerland, the bank is represented in Zurich .
