Autoliv is a Swedish-American manufacturer of automotive security systems . The company was founded in 1953 by Lennart Lindblad in Vårgårda , Sweden, and has been operating under the name Autoliv since 1968.

The brand name LIV for seat belts stood for Lindblads (car service) in Vårgårda, but the short form also has an ambiguity, because "Liv" is also the Swedish word for life.
