Unlike Karlsson

Swedbank Arena (today: Friends Arena ) in Solna near Stockholm

Swedbank AB (formerly FöreningsSparbanken , FSB for short ) is a Swedish credit institution and one of the largest banks in Northern Europe and the Baltic States . Anders Karlsson is the interim director of the bank.

Swedbank has cooperation agreements with around 80 small and medium-sized independent savings banks . Only two savings banks have not entered into any contracts, Sparbanken Finn and Sparbanken Gripen. Swedbank has around eight million private customers and 400,000 corporate customers in Sweden, Latvia , Lithuania and Estonia . In the Baltic countries , the bank operated under the name Hansabank until 2009 and has around 250 branches there. In Sweden there are 750 three times as many.

history

History is always pervaded by mergers and name changes. The most extensive merger took place in 1997 when Sparbanken Sverige and Föreningsbanken merged. However, the common history of the two banks dates back to 1820 when the first savings bank was founded in Gothenburg . During the merger in 1997, Sparbanken Sverige bought the smaller Föreningsbanken.

In the Swedish banking crisis , the savings banks were facing the end, as the write-offs on bad loans exceeded equity. The bad loans were moved to a bad bank for which the state was liable. In order to ensure the survival of the bank, the Swedish government had to give a guarantee for all deposits of this savings bank.

In the Baltic countries, Swedbank's real estate business came under fire during the financial crisis since 2008 because of many evictions. This would not have been possible in this form in Sweden. In addition, the risk-taking business conduct of the bank abroad was generally criticized in the mother country. The credit losses in the Baltic states led to the well-established name Hansabank being changed to Swedbank.

In December 2011 there was a run on the bank . About 10,000 Latvians withdrew a total of more than ten million lats from their accounts on December 11th after rumors of the bank's bankruptcy spread on Twitter .

Since 2008 (and then again since 2012) Swedbank has invested more and more in the Spanish real estate market through franchise subsidiaries.

In 2013 Swedbank closed its activities in Russia and Ukraine . The branch in Ukraine was sold in April 2013 to the main owner of Delta Bank in Kiev , Mykola Lahun (partly owned by the US Cargill Group) .

From 2008 to 2012, around 40 percent of the workforce was cut.

Suspicious Transactions

On February 20, 2019, the FAZ reported on research by the Swedish TV broadcaster SVT, according to which the money laundering scandal at Danske Bank was linked to suspicious transactions by Swedbank. Swedbank admitted this and has informed the investigative authorities about it. On February 20, 2019, Swedbank's share price temporarily fell by up to 12 percent on the stock exchange. The television broadcaster reported on the basis of the documents available to it that around 50 customers with suspicious features had transferred at least 40 billion Swedish kronor (equivalent to 3.8 billion euros) between the Baltic subsidiaries of Swedbank and Danske Bank between 2007 and 2015. According to the report, the suspicious customers of Swedbank should have been noticed because they were not doing any recognizable business and were used as mailbox companies or front men .
