history

The company was formed in 2003 through the merger of the Swedish company Telia and the Finnish company Sonera under the name TeliaSonera . In 2016 the group was renamed Telia Company . Telia itself was named Kungl in 1853 . Telegrafverket was founded, from 1953 to 1993 the name was Televerket before it was given its current name.

At the beginning of June 2008, France Télécom submitted an offer to take over Telia, which valued the company at 27 billion euros. After the management of Telia as well as the governments of the co-owners Sweden and Finland rated the offer as too low, the French decided not to increase the offer and withdrew it entirely in June 2008.

In 2009, Telia was the first mobile operator in the world to put its commercial 4G network based on LTE into operation in Sweden and Norway. Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania followed in 2010.
