Konecranes Oyj is a listed mechanical engineering company based in Hyvinkää , Finland , that manufactures cranes , hoists and forklifts .

history

Gantry crane RTG (Rubber Tired Gantry Crane) in Kiel

Konecranes was founded as an independent company in 1994 when it was separated from KONE .

In 2002 the Meiden Hoist System joint venture was founded with the Japanese company Meidensha .

On August 11, 2015, Konecranes announced its intention to merge with its US competitor Terex . Technically, Konecranes should take over Terex as part of a share swap (0.8 Konecranes shares per Terex share). The new company would operate as Konecranes Terex , be based in Hyvinkää , Finland , generate $ 10 billion in annual sales and employ 32,000 people. The combined company's shares should be listed on Nasdaq Helsinki and the New York Stock Exchange . Terex chief executive John L. Garrison, Jr. would lead the new company, while current Konecranes Chairman Stig Gustavson would keep his position with the new company. Terex shareholders should hold around 60 percent of the new company and Konecranes shareholders the remaining 40 percent. On 19 February 2016 Terex stopped the merger for the time being, since it is an unsolicited offer for the Chinese construction machinery manufacturer Zoomlion Heavy Industries over 3.3 billion US dollars received.

On May 16, 2016, Konecranes announced that it would abandon its merger plans with Terex and only want to buy its industrial cranes and port facilities for EUR 1.13 billion. The company plans to pay 723 million euros in cash for Terex Material Handling & Port Solutions , plus a block of shares that will give Terex a 25 percent stake in Konecranes.
