history

Kesko was founded in October 1940 shortly after the end of the Winter War , when four regional wholesalers merged. The wholesaler began operating across Finland at the beginning of 1941; the early years were overshadowed by the Continuation War from June 1941 to September 1944 . After the war, Kesko grew in the course of urbanization , structural change in the Finnish economy and the rise in general living standards.

In order to meet the demand for goods, Kesko set up its own production companies such as a coffee roastery , grain mills , slaughterhouses and a match factory . The nationwide network of K-markets grew in the 1960s and the branches began to specialize more and more in groceries. With the automation of the 1970s, hypermarkets came to Finland, the first K-Citymarket was founded in Lahti in 1971 .

The activities in Russia that began in 2005 were discontinued in 2016 (grocery stores) and 2018 (DIY stores).
