The Kone Corporation (proper spelling KONE) is a Finnish industrial company listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange and one of the four largest elevator and escalator manufacturers in the world with headquarters in Espoo .

The company was founded as a joint stock company in Finland on October 27, 1910 . The company's head office has been in Espoo, Finland, near Helsinki since it was founded . Kone has been active as an industrial company since 1910. The company's focus is on the elevator and escalator business, as well as automatic doors and gates . Over time, Kone grew through global acquisitions and is now represented in 60 countries.

history

History in the German-speaking area

In 1970, Ing.Stefan Sowitsch & Co.KG., founded in 1914, was the first company outside Scandinavia . affiliated to the Kone Group. Until 1999, the company incorporated into the group operated first as Sowitsch Aktiengesellschaft , later as Kone Sowitsch AG . On January 1, 2000, the subsidiary changed its name again, now to Kone Aktiengesellschaft .

The market entry into the German elevator industry took place in 1973 with the takeover of the Hanover-based company Hävemeier & Sander, Aufzüge , founded in 1873 .

In the mid-1980s, Kone acquired the Bauer elevator company in Augsburg .

In 1987, Kone entered the escalator market with a minority stake in the German escalator manufacturer O&K Escalators , founded in 1887 . In 1996, Kone then took over all of the shares in O&K Escalators.

As an independent subsidiary since 2012, Kone Automatiktüren GmbH , formerly Konematic, takes over the business with automatic doors and gates as well as loading technology.

The elevator company Kone Garant, based in Chemnitz, as well as Janzhoff Aufzüge and Klostermann Aufzüge are subsidiaries of Kone.

In January 2016, the family-run elevator company Fritz Schmitt GmbH + Co. was sold to Kone and implemented in the company in May 2017.

Thanks to its branches and subsidiaries, Kone GmbH has around 70,000 elevators and escalators as well as around 40,000 automatic doors and gates under maintenance.

With more than a thousand branches in over 60 countries, Kone is one of the leading companies in the elevator, escalator and automatic door industry. Founded in Finland in 1910, Kone has been listed on the OMX Nordic Stock Exchange Helsinki since 1967.

In Germany, Kone has 35 branches with around 1800 employees. The headquarters of Kone Germany are in Hanover , Kone Austria in Vienna and Kone Switzerland in Brüttisellen .

Test and training systems

At around 333 meters, the longest test shaft in the world is located underground in an abandoned mine in Lohja in Finland. Kone carries out - among other things - tests with elevators with up to 17 m / s, approx. 62 km / h.

The Kone Academy, a training, instruction and inspection center for elevators, escalators and automatic doors is located in Hanover . Various elevators and escalators are set up on around 2000 square meters.

In Kunshan, China, there is a 236-meter-high test facility with 12 elevator shafts and double-decker elevators.

Kone UltraRope is a rope technology for high-rise buildings with which the previously possible maximum lifting height is doubled to up to one kilometer. This eliminates the disadvantages of conventional steel ropes, which result in particular from their weight.

In February 2007, the EU imposed a fine of 142.12 million euros on Kone for involvement in the elevator and escalator cartel .
