Fortum is a listed energy supplier based in Espoo , the largest shareholder of which is the Finnish state with 50.8 percent . The company is active in the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as in Russia and Poland and is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

Business areas

Fortum Service is internationally known as an operator of power plants with an output of 18,370 MW el and 27,430 MW th . In addition to its own power plants in Northern Europe, Fortum operates power plants for third parties in Finland, Scandinavia, Germany and Great Britain as well as in several countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

As of April 1, 2016, business activities were divided into three areas:

  • The area generation (Engl. Generation ) is responsible for the large-scale production of energy by nuclear , water and thermal power in Northern Europe.
  • In the area of urban solutions (English. City Solutions ) the activities of air conditioning , waste incineration , biomass and circular economy are bundled. In addition, there is the service business for water and thermal power.
  • Fortum's energy and heat generation in Russia is an independent area.

At the end of 2018, Fortum owned 49.99% of the shares in the German energy producer Uniper . In October 2019, the share was already over 70% - subject to the pending approvals from the supervisory authorities of various countries.

history

In 2008, 92% of the electricity generated by Fortum in Europe was CO 2 -free, including a high proportion of nuclear energy from the Loviisa nuclear power plants in Finland and Oskarshamn and Forsmark in Sweden.

As a result of the EU Third Energy Package , which aimed at the separation of network operation from supply and production, sold Fortum in April 2011, its share of the transmission system operator Fingrid in the amount of 25% to the Finnish State (81%) and the insurance company Ilmarinen (19% ).

After the management level at Uniper was replaced, there was also a change at the top of fortum. From July 1, 2020, Markus Rauramo, the previous CFO, will be the new CEO and President.
