history

Historical logo until 2003

Originally, Outokumpu was primarily a vertically organized copper company based in the city of Outokumpu ; however, the corporate headquarters has meanwhile been relocated to Espoo and the stainless steel division has been expanded. The mine operated in Outokumpu was closed, 2005-2008 the copper business was sold.

In 2001 the company expanded to Germany. In March bought Outokumpu the field of aluminum technology from Deutz with 65 employees and a plant in Cologne , followed in July then for 52 million euros, the metallurgy business of the mg technologies belonging Lurgi AG .

In January 2001 Outokumpu's steel division Outokumpu Steel merged with Avesta Sheffield to form AvestaPolarit , which Outokumpu finally took over completely in 2002. At the beginning of 2004, AvestaPolarit was renamed Outokumpu Stainless and the entire Outokumpu branding was renewed.

In 2005 sales totaled 5.552 billion euros, generated by 10,764 employees. The earnings situation for 2005, however, was not satisfactory; the return on investment was only 1.9%, which was also largely achieved through one-off revenues.

In October 2006, Outokumpu's plant construction was spun off as a separate company and listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange under the name Outokumpu Technology. In April 2007 Outokumpu Technology was renamed Outotec .

With the purchase of ThyssenKrupp's stainless steel division Inoxum in January 2012, Outokumpu became the largest stainless steel producer in Europe. In return, ThyssenKrupp received 29.9% of the shares in Outokumpu. Due to competition law concerns on the part of the EU Commission, the VDM and AST (Acciai Speciali Terni) business units acquired in the course of the Inoxum takeover and some service centers were returned to ThyssenKrupp on March 1, 2014 .

In October 2015, the company announced that it would acquire 55% of its shares in the Chinese stainless steel joint venture Shanghai Krupp Stainless (SKS) between Outokumpu (60%) and Baosteel (40%) in the Chinese real estate fund Lujiazui International Trust Co. Ltd. to sell. In a second step, Outokumpu also sold the remaining shares (5%) in February 2016. In total, Outokumpu recorded one-off proceeds of 389 million euros (after taxes and repayment of debts) for the entire sale of its 60% shares SKS. At the same time, the business operations of SKS were discontinued and the workforce laid off.

In 2016, the company's headquarters were relocated to Helsinki .
