Company history

Foundation and history

The company was founded in Espoo , Finland in 1968 under the name Tietotehdas Oy. In the early years, Tietotehdas mainly operated in computer centers. IT systems were mainly developed and maintained for the Union Bank of Finland and its customers, as well as for wood industry companies.

The company's customer base grew in the 1970s and midi computers were introduced alongside the existing mainframe computers. In addition to services and software for mainframes, the development of IT systems was a central part of Tietotehdas' activities. Customers represented various industries and business activities were organized accordingly. In the 1990s, the company grew very rapidly through a series of acquisitions, mergers and strategic alliances. The company name was changed to TT Tieto in 1995 and Tieto in 1998. In 1996 the company significantly strengthened its activities in the telecommunications sector with the takeover of Avancer. In 1999 Tieto and Enator merged to become TietoEnator.

In the 2000s, the IT industry globalized and Tieto increased its international business. Offshore production began in 2004. At the same time, Indian companies began to penetrate the Nordic market and competition became tougher. In 2007 the company embarked on a new course back to Northern Europe. The global reach was retained in selected sectors, such as telecommunications.

On December 1, 2008, the company launched a new corporate brand and name, Tieto (which means "knowledge" in Finnish).

The importance of horizontal businesses and offshore resources is growing and the company is replacing the industry-based structure with a matrix consisting of country organizations, industries and global service areas. Offshore production increased significantly towards the end of the decade.

On January 1st, 2020, a merger with the Norwegian IT company "EVRY" took place. The combined organizations now form a new company called TietoEVRY. The company is one of the largest IT service providers in the Nordics.
