The OMX Helsinki 25 (OMXH25, formerly HEX 25) is a Finnish stock index . It comprises the 25 largest companies on the OMX Helsinki Stock Exchange .
calculation
Like the German DAX share index, the OMX Helsinki 25 is a performance index , with dividends from the stocks contained in the OMXH25 being reinvested in the index. The Finnish stock exchange supervisory authority decides on the composition. The OMXH25 has always included the 25 most traded stocks on the OMX Helsinki Stock Exchange , measured by the daily median of trading volumes on a half-year basis. The calculation is updated every second during OMX trading hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CET .
The composition is checked every six months and the weighting is checked quarterly, the latter being based on market capitalization . A special feature of the index is its relatively restrictive cap with a share of 10 percent. This is to ensure that individual companies do not exercise a dominant influence. For this reason, large Finnish companies such as Nokia , the utility Fortum and the insurance company Sampo are represented with shares of exactly 10 percent.

history
20th century
The index was launched on March 4, 1988 under the name HEX 25 with a base value of 500 points. In the following 13 months, the Finnish benchmark index rose by 58.8 percent. On April 17, 1989, it ended trading at 794.03 points. During the recession in the early 1990s, the HEX 25 fell to a closing level of 321.95 points by January 9, 1991. Since April 1989 this corresponds to a loss of 59.5 percent. After rising to 467.40 points by April 8, 1991, the stock market barometer fell by 57.6 percent in the following 17 months. On September 7, 1992, the HEX 25 ended trading at 198.31 points.
On February 14, 1997, the share index closed above the 1,000-point mark for the first time. On July 20, 1998, the stock market barometer ended trading at 1,725.56 points. The profit since September 1992 is 770.1 percent. In 1997 and 1998 parts of the world suffered financial , currency and economic crises ( Asian crisis , Russian crisis , Brazilian crisis ). The crises had made investors in Finland nervous and increased capital outflows. On October 8, 1998, the HEX 25 closed at 1,009.54 points. The loss since July 1998 is 41.5 percent.
In the next three years, the stock index achieved numerous records. On October 28, 1999, it ended trading for the first time above the 2,000 point mark and on December 23, 1999 for the first time above the 3,000 point mark. On March 6, 2000, the Finnish benchmark index closed at an all-time high of 3,502.48 points. The profit since October 1998 is 246.9 percent.
21st century
After the speculative bubble burst in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ), the index fell to a low of 1,093.37 points by October 8, 2002. That was a decrease of 68.8 percent since March 2000. It was the biggest fall in the history of the Index.
On November 15, 2004, the Stockholm Stock Exchange merged with the Helsinki Stock Exchange . In order to better distinguish the leading indices of the two countries, the Swedish index was renamed OMX Stockholm 30 and the Finnish index HEX 25 was renamed OMX Helsinki 25 .
October 8, 2002 means the end of the downward trend. From autumn 2002 the OMXH25 began to rise again. By July 13, 2007, it had increased by 209.0 percent to a closing level of 3,379.03 points. In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in summer 2007, the OMXH25 began to decline again. On September 29, 2008, it closed with 1,967.84 points below the 2,000 point mark. The share index reached a new low on March 9, 2009, when it ended trading at 1,189.09 points. Since July 13, 2007, this corresponds to a decrease of 64.8 percent.
March 9, 2009 marks the turning point of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the index was on the way up again. By February 1, 2011, it rose by 128.0 percent to a closing level of 2,710.72 points. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the index. On October 4, 2011, the OMX Helsinki 25 ended trading at 1,758.65 points. The loss since February 1, 2011 is 35.1 percent.
The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 4, 2013, the index closed at 2,327.39 points, 32.3 percent higher than on October 4, 2011.
