The Neste Oyj (previously Neste Oil Oyj ) is a petroleum company and biofuel producers from Finland . In addition to classic fuels, Neste produces the synthetic biofuel NExBTL from palm oil . The company is located in Espoo , west of the capital Helsinki .
Company profile
The company employs around 5,000 people and is listed on the OMX Helsinki 25 financial index. Neste is divided into four areas of the company: petroleum refining , petrochemical components, petroleum sales and shipping. Products include gasoline , diesel fuel , aircraft and ship fuel , bitumen , heating oil, and similar petroleum-based products.
Neste owns 900 filling stations in Finland and around 1980 filling stations in the Baltic States , Russia and Poland . Refineries are located in Naantali and near Porvoo, as well as various projects in the Baltic States and the United States .
The company also produces biodiesel in two plants in Porvoo, Finland, using the company's own NExBTL (“Next Generation Biomass-to-Liquid ”) technology, which, according to the company, can utilize a wide variety of raw materials, including palm oil, rapeseed oil and animal fats. In early 2008, Neste began building a third biodiesel production facility in Singapore . When it was completed at the end of 2010, this plant was the world's largest biodiesel plant with an annual capacity of 800,000 tons. Construction of a similarly large facility in the Maasvlakten region in the western part of the port of Rotterdam began in June 2008; the plant was put into operation in September 2011.
Rally Finland
The company is the main sponsor of the internationally important Rally Finland , the official name of which was changed to Neste Rally Finland in 1994 .
Shareholders
As a first state-based company went Neste Oil in the 1990s to the stock market . The Finnish state is by far the largest single shareholder and majority owner with a 50.1% stake (as of July 31, 2008). The next largest shareholder holds less than 3%.
criticism
Environmental organizations criticize that biodiesel made from palm oil is misleadingly sold all over Europe under the name “Neste Green Diesel”. The CO 2 balance of the agrofuel from Neste is worse than that of conventional diesel. According to the Public Eye Awards, the high demand and subsidies for biofuels in the EU and the USA would result in more and more expropriations and the destruction of the rainforest in Indonesia and Malaysia, for example . The chemicals required for production would poison humans and nature and the habitats of threatened species such as the orangutan would be destroyed. In addition, the use of the cultivated land for biofuels would make food more expensive. Because this production, even if it is done by suppliers, is not sustainable, Neste received the Negative Award 2011 from the Public Eye Awards supported by Greenpeace .
