environment

Since the end of 2009 UPM has been striving to reposition itself as a bio and forest industry company. The products should be made from renewable raw materials and should be recyclable. That is why the company now calls itself the "Biofore Company". The term combines the words "organic" and "Forest" (Engl. For Forest ) together.

The company is the world's largest processor of waste paper for the production of graphic paper and relies on a balanced ratio of recycled fibers and wood from sustainable forest management in production. The latter is ensured by the fact that most of the wood processed is certified according to the international standards FSC or PEFC . In addition, product chain systems should ensure that the wood comes from legal and non-controversial sources.

All UPM pulp and paper mills have a certified environmental management system according to ISO 14001 and all European sites as well as UPM's pulp mill in Uruguay are EMAS validated. Except for one plant, all plywood factories and sawmills are ISO 14001 certified and the Austrian sawmill is EMAS validated. A large part of the paper products has been awarded the European Union Ecolabel.

In 2010 UPM received the “Best Innovator” award in the “Sustainable Innovation Management” category for the UPM ProFi Deck flooring, an alternative for the wooden planks of terraces and balconies, in which the residues from the company's own label production are recycled.
