UPM Ettringen (also known as Lang Papier ) is a paper mill in Ettringen in the Unterallgäu district . It is part of the Myllykoski Corporation , which is now part of the UPM Kymmene group. It is an important employer for the Wertachtal region . The main products are newsprint and SC papers .

The environmental management system according to ISO 14001 and the EU Eco-Audit Regulation (EMAS) has been in place at UPM Ettringen since 2004 .

history

The factory was founded in 1897 by Michael Lang, a citizen of Ettringen, and his brothers under the company name Gebrüder Lang GmbH (later expanded to Gebrüder Lang GmbH Papierfabrik ) and first produced ground wood products. The first paper machine was put into operation in 1910. In 1963, waste paper was used for the first time . In 1987 the previous family business was taken over by new Finnish owners. In the 1990s, the company developed gravure and offset papers that contain a lot of waste paper.

Paper machine 3 was shut down in 2012, reducing the total capacity to 460,000 tons of paper per year; the number of employees fell to almost 400. Two thirds of the production is magazine papers. On January 17, 2013, UPM announced the shutdown of paper machine 4 in mid-2013. Only the paper machine 5 thus remains in operation.

Production facilities

With around 250 employees, the company is still one of the largest industrial companies in the area. Two paper machines are in operation on the factory premises. UPM Ettringen currently only operates one paper machine with a total capacity of 280,000 tons of paper per year. In October 2013, UPM and Aviretta signed a "Letter of Intent" for the takeover of the decommissioned paper machine 4 by Aviretta GmbH , which was carried out later. The paper machine was converted to the production of corrugated base paper, Aviretta operates as an independent company on the UPM site.

Rail connection

Railway connection of UPM Ettringen

On January 24, 2000, a newly built track section from the former Ettringen train station to the company premises was inaugurated, for which a railway bridge was built over the Wertach, among other things. This connects the factory site with the Türkheim train station via the Staudenbahn . There is a connection to the Buchloe – Memmingen railway line . In addition, there is a three-track marshalling station at Ettringen station after a barred level crossing. It is operated by DB Cargo trains . The line is owned by Bahnbetriebsgesellschaft Stauden mbH.

Construction of a thermal power station with waste incineration

In order to take an old heavy oil power plant out of operation, a new heating power plant should be operated with substitute fuels and waste incineration. The construction of the facility was controversial among the residents of the area; but was ultimately not carried out due to economic considerations and pressure from a citizens' initiative.

Sale of the hydropower plant

The hydropower plant of the company located on the Wertach was sold to the Augsburg energy supplier Erdgas Schwaben in 2017 .
