Albbruck paper mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Albbruck paper factory was a paper factory on the site of the former Albbruck ironworks in Albbruck in the Waldshut district .

history

After the ironworks was shut down, after four years of vacancy in 1870, the Swiss National Councilor Nicolaus Kaiser from Grellingen bought the factory for HOLZSTOFF , which initially produced wood pulp here and after this pulp was difficult to sell, the first paper machine was installed in 1880 . Two more paper machines soon followed, and a fourth was added in 1906. In 1931, the Albbruck – Schwaderloch Rhine bridge was built here for workers from nearby Switzerland .

After the Second World War, the fifth machine was installed, and the sixth followed in 1962. This was state-of-the-art and was able to produce over 150 tons of newsprint or thin printing paper every day. In 1971 the installation of the machine VII. Electricity is produced in hydroelectric power station Hohenfels on the Alb . The water requirement was covered by a side canal of the Rhine. The production capacity was around 310,000 tons of paper / year, but was ultimately no longer competitive.

In January 2011, the paper mill was transferred to the Finnish company UPM-Kymmene through the Finnish owner Myllykoski , which closed the paper mill at the beginning of 2012. UPM sold both the site and the factory to the Karl Group from Innernzell , and a business park is to be built.

Rack railway

For the transport of paper, a works railway was put into operation in 1905, which connected the paper mill with the Hochrheinbahn . Since there was a height difference of 18 meters from the factory to the Albbruck train station, the route was designed as a rack railway . The standard-gauge line was equipped with a single-lamellar rack from the Abt system over a length of 400 meters and had a maximum gradient of 86 ‰. A maximum speed of 25 km / h was permitted on the friction section of the track, while 10 km / h was allowed on the rack section. Two two-axle tank locomotives of the type B / a-n2t with the numbers 3340 and 3400 were used on the rack railway , which were supplied by the Esslingen machine factory in 1905 and 1907 . In 1929, the Albbruck paper factory also bought the two-axle tank locomotive 6749 from the Hegge paper factory , which was operated in 1913 by the Krauss & Comp. for the Kinsauer rack railway had been delivered.

In 1952, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen delivered a new three-axle steam locomotive of the type Cn2t, which was only used on the factory premises and not on the rack section due to the lack of a gear drive. The two Esslingen cogwheel locomotives were then retired in 1953. In 1965 the rack was removed and from then on the track was operated in friction mode. The cogwheel locomotive 6749 was decommissioned and replaced by a diesel-powered shunting locomotive from Orenstein & Koppel, which was put into operation on May 20, 1967 . In the 1970s the still existing Esslingen steam locomotive was parked. In April 1982, the paper mill bought another O&K locomotive from the Nievenheim-Zons industrial railway , which was identical to the first diesel locomotive. On September 1, 2005, Railion took over the operation of the connection. The two factory locomotives were parked and sold on July 19, 2006. With the closure of the paper mill, the siding ceased operations in 2012.
