The Valmet is a publicly traded company with its headquarters in Espoo , Finland . The company is a provider of services and technologies for the pulp , paper and energy industries . Valmet in its current form emerged in December 2013 as a spin-off from the conglomerate Metso .

history

Valmet (originally Valtion Metallitehtaat - State Metalworks ) was founded in 1951 as part of the unification of all metalworking companies in Finland. Finland took this step in order to be able to pay the war reparations against the Soviet Union . Valmet brought together different types of companies that manufactured many different products in their factories, such as: B. Airplanes , automobiles , railroad cars , weapons and things of everyday life.

Many parts of the company have been sold or merged with other companies in recent years, the aviation division today belongs to Patria and the shipping division to Aker . The forest machinery division of Valmet was again sold to the Japanese company Komatsu in 2004 . Through the merger with Rauma Oy in 1999, Valmet merged with its subcontractors and brands in the successor company Metso .

At the end of May 2013, Metso announced the spin-off of the Metso Pulp, Paper & Power division under the name Valmet .

Planes

The valtion lentokonetehdas (dt. State aircraft factory) with production facilities in Tampere , Kuorevesi and Nokia -Linnavuori was first after the war ended in 1945 after the merger in metal industry in Valtion Metallitehtaat Lentokonetehdas (dt. State Metalworks aircraft factory) and in 1951 finally Valmet Lentokonetehdas dt ( . Valmet Aircraft Plant) renamed. In 1967 all activities were bundled at the Kuorevesi location. In 1989 there was another change of name to Valmet Lentokoneteollisuus (German: Valmet aircraft industry), before this area was incorporated into the newly created Patria Group on September 5, 1996 as Patria Finavitec Oy was privatized .

Under the name Valmet were trainer aircraft Tuuli II (1951), Vihuri (1951), L-70 Vinka (1975) and L-90 TP Redigo (1985) as well as the glider tractor PIK-23 Towmaster produced (1982).

Automobiles

Under the name Saab-Valmet , the Swedish Saab-Scania and Valmet founded a joint venture for the production of automobiles in Uusikaupunki in 1968 . After Saab's departure in 1992, Valmet became the sole owner. The company was renamed Valmet Automotive in 1995 and became the property of Metso following the merger in 1999, where it remained after Valmet was re-established in 2013.

In January 2017, the Chinese battery manufacturer CATL acquired 22% of the shares in the Valmet Automotive division as the basis for a strategic partnership in the production of electrified vehicles.

Agricultural machinery

Valmet started manufacturing tractors in-house in 1951 and took over Volvo's tractor division in 1979 . In 1994 this line of business was sold to Sisu . As part of the sale, the right to use the “Valmet” brand for tractors was limited to April 2001, so that from 1997 the double brand “Valtra Valmet” was established under the owner Partek , before the final renaming to Valtra took place in January 2001 .

Arms and military industries

Valmet has developed and manufactured sporting, hunting and military weapons. Parts of the arms production were merged with Sako , which in turn switched to the Beretta Holding . Shipyards

Valmet also included shipyards , which after some restructuring are now part of the Aker Group.
